Muhammad Umar Memon was professor emeritus of Urdu literature and Islamic studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He was a critic, short story writer and translated numerous works of Urdu fiction. He was editor of the Annual of Urdu Studies (1993–2014). He passed away in June 2018 in Madison, Wisconsin.
